Fattoria di Poggiopiano
Fattoria di Poggiopiano is an organic farm near Florence producing Extra Virgin Olive Oil and wine.
The Poggiopiano farm is situated just 7km from the historic city of Florence in Tuscany, Italy. Alberto and Carlo Galardi acquired the farm in 1935 and began producing wines and olive oil from the grapes and olives cultivated there. They also developed ingenious new ways to press grapes and extract oil from olives inventing machines and implements to use and sell to other producers. Mauro Galardi took over the business and in 1985 after a spell of bad weather destroyed many of the olive trees and vines he took the difficult decision to pull up the remaining plants and start again from scratch, planting new vines and olive groves and restoring farm buildings to let out as tourist accommodation. The gamble paid off, and with the same passion for innovation as his predecessors, Mauro continues to be a proud producer of fine wine and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
The terrain and climate at the farm in the Florentine foothills offers ideal growing conditions with gravelly, chalk soil and low humidity reducing the risk of parasites to enable low impact organic farming methods to be successful. Only traditional Tuscan varieties of olive are grown, having been selected for their renowned flavour and quality. Leccino, Moraiolo and Frantoio olives are carefully cultivated for crops of mature fruits with a fine, distinctive and aromatic flavour unique to the region. Attention to detail is paramount with hygiene and quality standards scrupulously maintained and an organic farming certification backing up the exceptional quality of the produce from Fattoria di Poggiopiano.
