Lefktro and the Environment

As an international importer and exporter, Lefktro takes its responsibility to the environment seriously. This can be seen through our selection of suppliers in terms of the steps they have taken to become environmentally aware and the methods by which our goods are transported and delivered throughout the world. Recyclable materials, low pollution emission, less traffic congestion are just a few of the issues which we seek to address through our day-to-day ongoing operations. We are committed to providing quality goods, excellent service and competitive prices whilst minimising the impact on the environment.

Working in partnership with our suppliers is key to our successful environmental policy. For example, suppliers such as the Union of Cooperatives of Messinia, Greece are recognised as Climate Partners having contributed to a climate protection project which concentrated on the compensation of greenhouse gases.

Whilst economic times are challenging, it is interesting to note that many of the cooperatives and mills have been driven to energy saving in the production of extra-virgin olive oil by the increasing cost of fuel and in the last two years there has been significant investment in more efficient machines for milling and pressing the oil and for separating the oil and water.

The majority of our oil is available in either tin, PET or glass. Recycled PET is a desired secondary resource, producing PET flakes which are used as the raw materials for products which would otherwise be made of polyester. Glass recycling requires around 30% less energy to melt than raw material whilst tin is a highly recyclable material due to its intrinsic properties and economic value.

As part of our commitment to the environment, Lefktro works alongside Gregory Distribution and supports the use of their Green Fleet whenever possible. Gregory identifies ‘green routes’ for drivers, ensuring that vehicles operate along major trunk lanes. Fewer gear changes and stable driving speeds reduce overall emissions, while exposure to traffic congestion is decreased by suitable road selection and travelling outside busy periods.

In addition Lefktro is developing and implementing a system of environmental management and working towards obtaining ISO 14001.
